Re; Look of the Irish – Not the winner, but happy to be in the top 4

My finger nails were nearly completely consumed while I was waiting to here the results of the “look of the Irish” photography competition that was broadcast today just before noon. I went for a walk to the Grannery coffee shop in Waterford city for a meeting with my supervisor regarding my dissertation, my crusty old mobile phone was held tightly in my left hand and my research paper sealed in a clear see thou plastic A4 folder was held simerly in the other. My mind raised with the thought of the first prise, A Cannon 500D camera, oh the fun I could have with one of them, my mind was racing with dreams of movie making with its HD function and the photos that one day I would take with it, not to mention the lenses I could save up to acquire that will leave me in financial ruin for years to come… when suddenly I received a text message from my mother, “Hard luck John, love ma x.” my dreams were just that, happy little figments of my imagion.

I would like to congratulate the winner and my recent competitor Brenden Lawlor for his juxtaposing shot taking at the Galway races, and gladly tip my hat, well done to you sir. To the other competitors I would like to say well done and I am glad to be one of you,

On a final note I would also like to thank  Tom Lawlor for his kind comments regarding my Image, and fighting in my corner. To all the team that works so hard behind the scenes at RTE (Connor, Agnes, David) and of course Erin the little girl in the photo for making it possibal.

keep on trucking.

kind Regards

John…

Shortlisted for the Look of the Irish !!!

Last Friday while trying to wright my dissertation I over heard that it was the final day to enter the “look of the Irish” photography competition. With only an hour to go be for the deadline, I quickly scanned through my photos for one that I thought would be appropriate, I wrote a few words describing the scene and email it without giving it a second thought.

To my delight I received a phone call on the Sunday informing me that it has been chosen as one of the final 4, and that I would be going on air some time this week to talk about this photo. Ive got all my fingers and toes crossed that I won’t fluff it up as this will be my first time talking on the radio and even in a class of 6 my throat goes dryer then the Sahara desert and I tend to croak a lot…

sure all I can do is wait and see… good luck to everyone involved and Id just like to say that I’m proud to be one of you.

regards John

Omar Simon “Our World”

This is a music video that I edited in early 2008. The director was a man called Kevin Cahill, a good guy with a really deep voice kinda like Ronnie Drew, that is of course if Ronnie stirred his whisky with a rusty nail. Last I heard Kevin was off following a Rugby team to new zealand documenting their experience…

Anyway hope you like it.

My Dissertation Outline; “Does Nicolas Bourriaud’s theory of Relational Aesthetics apply in an online environment”

  1. Describe Nicolas Bourriaud’s essays/Theory “Relational Aesthetics (Word Count 500 words)
  2. Describe his follow on essays/theory of “post production” (500 words)
  3. Describe the Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 environment using the sociological economical and technological advances. (1000 Words) this will introduce some key writers of this new environment.
  4. Outline how the theory of Relational Aesthetics could apply on-line (500 words)
this can help frame or at least compare the actives’ of using web 2.0 applications to the theories listed.
  5. Describe why it could not apply on-line. Looking at reasons why it does not work or why it has not been focused on will give a good counter argument for me to articulate a conclusion. This will be looking at high art, traditionalist and the donation culture that has being ruling the western world from **** till right about know.
  6. Look at 2 Case studies:
    a)    No place Tate Gallery (500/1000)

    b)    YouTube Symphony /Kutiman Truyou project (500/1000)

In my conclusion I will have to look at the interdiction of Web 2.0 technologies, the evolution of creative commons as appose to its former inflexible protester of copyright and the culture of mass collaboration and interconnect in this age of sharing.

This is an outline for my research:

I would also like to bring in to the dissertation number discussions on how we view and interact with contemporaries art this should help articulate the focus of how I think the on-line environment and art has a prominent role in today’s context. It is my understanding that the Arts capture the world current situation I believes in evolution and must evolve with it…

The Nature of this research is to describe the on-line environment and the theory/essays of Nicolas Bourriaud’s relational Aesthetics. To examine if in fact the theory does in fact apply on-line giving examples by way of case studies and content analyst. Explaining how it would be possible or not to apply the theory of relational Aesthetics on-line. I plan to develop an argument for both to help to have a better understanding of this topic and to help articulate this theory in a new context.

This dissertation is testing a theory (Relational Aesthetics) in a new environment, the paper will describe existing knowledge but articulating the knowledge in a new construct. But most of all it is to solve the problem to my questions.

I am pursuing this dissertation for a Variety of reasons, to solve the answer to the question I have constructed. To acquire a new skill set and information. To advance my career academically and on practical bases but most of all, out of interest.
